He recently transitioned the dojo to a more functional karate style that blends with other arts. Darrel also established a UK branch of the Goju Ryu Kenpoukai, creating direct links to Sensei Yoshio Kuba at the Kenbukan Honbu Dojo in Okinawa, Japan. This is a fantastic achievement for the Dojo, and he is currently the Head of the UK Branch of the Kenpoukai. He has been inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame on several occasions for his contributions to the martial arts.

Life Outside Martial Arts
Outside the dojo, Helen has spent much of her career teaching in primary education, which shines through in her exceptional rapport with our younger students. Her sessions are warm, supportive, and expertly structured thanks to her deep understanding of child development.
A passionate fitness enthusiast, Helen can often be found heading out on one of her “small” runs—though most people would need months of training to keep up! She also enjoys long walks with her beloved dog, Stella. In addition, Helen is a talented amateur photographer who regularly captures fantastic moments in and around the dojo, using just her trusty camera phone!.

Both her children, whilst now grown up, hold black belts in multiple styles from MMA, having trained with us for many years.

James 'Jim' Yates

Instructor
Martial Arts Background & Role at the Dojo
Jim is an Instructor in Karate at Modern Martial Arts and holds a 1st Dan black belt, but his actual depth of experience lies in Taekwondo, where he has trained for decades. His skill and agility often shine brightest during sparring sessions, where he seems to run rings around even the younger adult students!

Achievements, Influences & Contributions
Jim holds a 3rd-degree black belt in Taekwondo and has one of the longest cumulative training histories of anyone at MMA, with over 40 years of martial arts experience. His dedication to continuous improvement has taken him to Okinawa, where he trained under one of the world's highest-ranked masters to enhance his techniques and understanding further.

Life Outside Martial Arts
Jim brings a wealth of life experience to the dojo, including time spent working in door security—an environment that demands calmness, awareness, and the ability to handle dynamic situations. This background gives him a steady, level-headed approach to training, which is evident on the mats as he maintains composure and focus even under pressure.

Fun fact! Jim and his wife nearly scaled Mount Fuji, 'by accident', one sunny Sunday afternoon in October!
